Beauty amongst the chaos of weathered surfaces exists in a constant state of metamorphosis and is found in ordinary spots, generally not considered attractive. The images in this collection are rife with adumbration and metaphor, and speak to inaudible naturally occurring processes. Images in this collection bear no titles; interpretations are best left to the viewers’ experiences and imaginations.

Rust Never Sleeps
Fort Worden is part of a chain of Washington State Coastal Fortresses built in the latter part of the 19th and early 20thcenturies. Now a state park, Fort Worden is maintained in a state of supervised decay with the consequence that unprotected metal surfaces suffer the unrelenting ravages of rust and corrosion. Complaints about the rusting of iron date back to the Roman Empire when Roman Army Generals expressed annoyance about the corrosion of their iron weaponry. Pliny the Elder called rust, ferrum corrumpitur, or “spoiled iron”. For many years the paint company, Rust-Oleum, used the advertising slogan, Rust Never Sleeps. And in 1979 the rock musician Neil Young utilized this aphorism for an album release to convey the notion that self-renewal is a remedy to irrelevance. Others consider Rust Never Sleepsto be a metaphor for staying on top of one’s game.

Quandaries, Choices, and Outcomes
Fort Worden, Fort Casey, and Fort Flagler are part of a chain of Washington State Coastal Fortresses built in the latter part of the 19th and early 20th centuries which form a “Triangle of Fire” guarding the entrance to Admiralty Inlet. Built to withstand sustained aerial attack the battery interiors, invariably dimly lit, consist of a many rooms, small or cavernous, interconnected by a warren of passageways. Entering the labyrinth one is immediately confronted by a quandary. Does one enter a portal or passageway and if one does what are the next steps and the eventual outcome? Continue, turn right, left, or go straight on to encounter satisfaction and enjoyment or danger? And if the choice is not to enter one will never know. For the return to daylight the same set of quandaries and choices are presented as steps are retraced. Exploration of coastal fortresses is a metaphor for the journey through life with the exception that exactly retracing one’s steps is impossible.

Accumulating Light: Ghosts of Fort Point
Fort Point, a massive seacoast fortification, was built during the Civil War to protect San Francisco against attack. Characterized by arched brick casemates the interior structure exudes strength and beauty and is a labyrinth of irregular network passages, alcoves, and portals. Much of the inside is dark, gloomy, and spooky affording opportunity for discovery. Roaming the interior leads one to ponder what life was like for the soldiers who manned the fort’s artillery. I wanted traces of long ago military activity, and the intrinsic variety of textures, shapes, and tones, to emerge from the near darkness. Ultimately, my lengthy presence in the darkened interior attracted attention from an inquisitive National Park Service Ranger. I responded by saying that I was taking multi minute exposures to which he said, “you are accumulating light”.

Faded Glory - Streets of Old Havana
Walking the streets of Old Havana I was struck by the bygone beauty of the buildings and tried to imagine it during its heyday. My visual impressions and interpretations are presented in this gallery.

Hershey Town, Cuba
Milton S. Hershey, of chocolate magnate fame, visited Cuba in 1916 and established a raw sugar refinery about 30 miles east of Havana. Alongside the looming mill, once among the world’s most advanced, the factory town had its own electric railway, school, housing, health clinic and additional amenities to support the workers living in the community. The factory is now abandoned and in a state of ruin, but the town remains, albeit much smaller. The photographs in this gallery represent my exploration of and reaction to the forsaken mill, a gutted ghostly hulk, and immediate surroundings.

Outside the Stone
The exterior face of stone is rife with information about its geological history comprising details of geo-chemistry, origin and formation, and impacting external processes. Characteristics and patterns of color, texture, the presence of layers and striations, provide intimations of molding geological processes. Curiously, the myriad designs found on stone surfaces are reminiscent, in some instances, of living cell structure. My inspiration for this series of images, Outside the Stone, stems from a desire to more fully illuminate the geological characteristics of exterior stone faces by altering image hue, saturation, and luminosity in such a manner as to facilitate an enhanced appreciation of their intrinsic beauty.
